STAR TREK: NEMESIS Should Have Been More Like ThisFebruary 25, 2010 tvtv3(Sorento, IL United States) Marketed as a prequel to the movie STAR TREK, STAR TREK: COUNTDOWN is a story set within the original ST: TNG universe many years after STAR TREK: NEMESIS. The plot of the story revolves around the characters of Spock and a Romulan miner named Nero. Years have passed since the events of STAR TREK: NEMESIS. Romulus, though still a guarded empire, is on fairly friendly terms with the Federation. After years of careful and strategic planning that eventually alienated from his home world of Vulcan, Spock lives on Romulus as the Federation ambassador. However, a cosmic implosion of the Hobus system threatens the world he now lives upon as well as the past twenty years of his life's work. After being turned down by the Romulan Senate, Spock finds an ally in a deep space miner named Nero, who was present when the Hobus system went supernova. Nero is convinced that what he witnessed threatens the life of all those who live on Romulus and joins Spock on a trip to Vulcan where the technology to save Romulus lies. However, things don't go as planned and Nero turns from being Spock's ally into a most ruthless enemy.
As a graphic novel/TPB, STAR TREK: COUNTDOWN is about average. It does feature some nice artwork that, though not overly impressive, still captures the tone and atmosphere of the time period and universe that the story takes place. I found some of the page layouts confusing as they shift from one to two-page layouts in the same pages and that makes it difficult to follow parts of the story.
Unlike many Star Trek stories, the sci-fi aspects of the story are rather juvenile and the character development of Nero is quite choppy. I think the unscientific sci-fi is because of this storyline tying in to the movie STAR TREK; some of the action sequences read almost like watching a movie. As for Nero, I just found it really disappointing how there is very little consistency in his character. For instance, he believes the Hobus supernova to be an immediate threat to Romulus, yet he leaves his pregnant wife behind when he leaves with Spock. Why doesn't he make plans for her to at least be traveling? Also, other than his wife and crew (who follow him blindly), Spock is the only person who trusts in Nero. Spock makes Nero a confidant in his plans and shares with him many things. Yet, Spock is the person he holds responsible for the destruction of Romulus. Not only is it not consistent with his character, it also seems something that is below his intelligence.
The best thing that STAR TREK: COUNTDOWN does is introducing characters from the Next Generation and tying together some of the loose ends that were left after the rather disappointing end of STAR TREK: NEMESIS. Picard, LaForge, Data, and Worf all have appearances. The writers did an excellent job of interlaying these cameos and believably tying them to the prequel studio-fabricated storyline. Therefore, though STAR TREK: COUNTDOWN might not appeal to people who aren't familiar with Star Trek, it has a lot of appeal for fans, especially TNG fans. In many ways, it's the story that NEMESIS should have been.
Next RegenerationDecember 15, 2009 Gareth Browne(Wellington, NZ) I loved the JJ Abrahms movie but was a bit in the dark about how exactly it connected with the old universe. This graphic novel explains it well with a cracking story line of it's own. It was released as a teaser for the movie but I think it stands up on it's own two feet regardless of whether you have, have not, intend to or never intend to watch the Star Trek: The Movie.
Enjoyable read, worth borrowingDecember 9, 2009 Vivek Gupta I enjoyed reading this comic prior to the movie, but would have enjoyed the movie just as much without it. If you can borrow the comic from someone else it would certainly be worth it. However, if you are a collector of all things Start Trek, the prequel is worth it.
Countdown Trade Paperback -- It's OKNovember 20, 2009 P. McCoy(Greenbelt, MD United States) I managed to come across this TPB, in a brick-and-mortar bookstore while waiting to see the Star Trek movie again. It's okay that it gave a visual back-story leading up the the feature film and good for a souvenir.

If you want REAL Star Trek, watch REAL Star Trek: the 5 series, and the 10 movies. This stuff (as well as the new movie)is trash.
