Amazon.com Warping into syndication in 1987, Star Trek: The Next Generation successfully launched its seven-season "continuing mission" of the starship Enterprise, and this classy DVD boxed set gathers the show's inaugural season in crisp picture clarity and dazzling 5.1-channel sound. A ratings leader with a sharp ensemble cast, this revamped Trek honored series creator Gene Roddenberry's original Trek concept, nurtured by returning veterans like producer Robert H. Justman and writers D.C. Fontana and David Gerrold. Several first-season episodes have original-series counterparts, and while the season was awkwardly inconsistent for all involved (including Roddenberry's heir apparent, producer Rick Berman), in retrospect the series began on remarkably solid footing.
Patrick Stewart was perfect as Enterprise Captain Jean-Luc Picard, while Marina Sirtis struggled with a wretched hair bun and an ill-defined character, eventually blessing Counselor Troi with delicate nuance. Denise Crosby made a strong but underutilized impression as Security Chief Tasha Yar, and left the series before season's end, allowing writers to develop Klingon Lieutenant Worf (Michael Dorn) into a fan favorite. Brent Spiner transcended Spock comparisons with his triumphant portrayal of the android Lieutenant Commander Data; and while Jonathan Frakes was accepted as First Officer Will Riker, fans ultimately rejected Wil Wheaton as ensign Wesley Crusher, the teenaged son of the ship's doctor (Gates McFadden). Still, these 25 episodes laid a firm foundation for subsequent seasons, and highlights include the Raymond Chandleresque "holo- novel" of "The Big Goodbye," Data's backstory in "Datalore," the Klingon rituals of "Heart of Glory," and a Romulan encounter in "The Neutral Zone." The DVD supplements (all on the seventh disc) are good enough to make anyone wish for more: four featurettes recall myriad first-season challenges, filled with insider perspective and enough NextGen trivia to satiate all but the most obsessive Trekkers back on Earth. Looking back, it's easy to see why NextGen lived long and prospered. --Jeff Shannon
The Next Generation Season 1July 12, 2010 Ben Nicholson(Landrake, Saltash, Cornwall, UK) A good start with the 1st series here. Some very good episodes a few that are not quite as good but genrally good. The tasha yar character is a seems a bit eager (she get's a bit to extreme sometimes) to blow things and Diana Troi can get a bit annoying sometimes (and why is she alway's on the bridge when she is a councellor). It start's the Next Generation of well but it's still trying to find it's feet. It's a good cross between complete sillyness of the orginal series and the less silly DS9 (or real world). It's a very good series and well worth the money.
Start Trek The Next Generation - Season 1July 12, 2010 L. Schumacher(Cali) Fab! Packaging is great and the quality of the DVDs is superb! Very happy with it and I'll be getting the following seasons. I'll be getting them individually due to cost since it's a bit easier to foot the bill for an individual season every few months as opposed to the complete series. Plus, I read a few of the reviews for the green complete series box set and many said the packaging was cheap. The silver individual season boxes are great packaging with an episode/disk list on the front cover and each disk has the episodes listed on them as well.

A must have for Star Trek fans big and small. (along with the other six seasons)
The individual seasons have very attractive packaging and look great in the bookshelf.
After watching four seasons of Star Trek: Enterprise, I needed more. I went ahead and purchased everything "Star Trek" I could find on Amazon.com.
Like most people I was not able to watch every episode over the seven years stretch that this series aired. Catching an episode in re-run here and there just wasn't good enough. So, I bought this and I am very glad I did.
Season One is a bit of a shock to my memory. There are special effects in this that will definitely need to be cleaned up and digitized in future commerative releases. A clay-mation tick in the episode: "Conspiracy" is just too funny to see after watching the special effects of the most recent Star Trek television series: Enterprise, and the reboot movie.
The first year was from 1987 -- almost 25 years ago! A lot of the episodes can be watched without any "shout out" moments. But, there are those times when you just have to ask why they didn't use the transporter in that situation like they did in the later episodes?!
This is a great set and true to when it first aired, flaws and all. An excellent production.
For those fans who are purists, this is as pure as a television series copied onto DVD can get.
Excellent acting and writing and good quality packagingApril 11, 2010 Edward C. Charbonnet(Memphis, TN) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
After all of these years it has been great to get back to the STNG early shows and see the crew members getting to know each other. Great action and humor.
Those holding out for BD release...February 22, 2010 C. Wollenburg 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
... After watching all 7 seasons on DVD now I have found that the visual quality is quite pleasant even on a large display (52" Bravia :)). So there's no real point in holding out as there probably wont be a "this-Gen" release anyway.
